At the Catholic Media Association’s annual conference, Maryknoll’s English and Spanish language magazines and its Orbis Books won 45 awards.
Maryknoll and Misioneros magazines combined won 25 awards from the Catholic Media Association for outstanding work in 2024 and Orbis Books won 20 awards, which were announced Friday, June 27, at the Catholic Media Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.
Misioneros won the top honor as Spanish Publication of the Year, while Maryknoll claimed third place for best website and an honorable mention for magazine of the year in the mission category. In total the two magazines won nine first-place awards.
Maryknoll Father Joseph Veneroso won two awards for original poetry in Maryknoll, while Maryknoll Father Alejandro Marina’s series “Misiones en Latinoamérica” earned a first-place award for Misioneros. Maryknoll Sister Mary Ellen Manz earned awards for both magazines for her article on the Maryknoll Sisters’ work in education in Cambodia.
Magazines staff won 11 awards for articles and Maryknoll’s art director won an honorable mention for best layout.
“I’m very grateful for and proud of the recognition we’ve received for both Maryknoll and Misioneros magazines,” Editor-in-Chief Lynn F. Monahan said. “As a bilingual team that works collaboratively across both our English and Spanish editions, awards for either magazine reflect upon the talents and hard work of our entire editorial staff as well as our designers.”
“That said we are particularly honored by the recognition for our Spanish-language Misioneros magazine, which was named Spanish Publication of the Year and received five first places among the 15 awards it received,” he said.
Seven of the 25 awards the magazines received are for reporting on social justice issues, which is core to Maryknoll’s mission to served marginalized people and those working in care of God’s creation, he noted.
Orbis Books, the publishing arm of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, received 20 awards for titles published in 2024, including first place awards for Elizabeth Johnson’s Come Have Breakfast: Meditations on God and the Earth, for Massimo Faggioli’s Theology and Catholic Higher Education, and Alessandra Harris’s In the Shadow of Freedom: The Enduring Call for Racial Justice. Robert Ellsberg, the publisher of Orbis Books, was recognized as one of three authors of the year, and his book Dorothy Day: Spiritual Writings won second place in the contemporary spirituality category.
“As always, these awards reflect the range of our program with books for the scholar and the general reader,” Ellsberg wrote in his publisher’s newsletter, “for those seeking to understand what is wrong with our world and how it could be different, and those pursuing a faith and renewed Church that does justice, that loves peace, and hears the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth.”
